Favorite Castle is located on a hill north of the residential castle in the
spacious Favorite Park, whose woods were originally used as a pheasantry.
The baroque castle served Eberhard Ludwig as a "pleasure and hunting lodge".
It was built in the Baroque style between 1717 and 1723 by Duke Eberhard Ludwig
according to the designs of the court architect Donato Giuseppe Frisoni.
During the planning phase, Favorite Palace was designed purely as a hunting lodge
and summer villa with a beautiful view of the Ludwigsburg Residential Palace.
In 1748, the castle served as the backdrop for a magnificent firework display at the
wedding of Duke Carl Eugen to
Elisabeth Friederike Sophie von Brandenburg-Bayreuth.
From 1806, King Friedrich I had the palace park converted into a zoo with deer, chamois and deer. Architect Nikolaus Friedrich von Thouret renovated the interior of the castle in a classical style.
In the 20th century, the castle fell into oblivion and was in poor condition until it was completely restored from around 1980 and equipped with valuable furniture.
Todays use
Favorite Palace has been open to the public again since 1983. It is one of the state's monuments and is managed by the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg.
